Dutchess County Telecommunications
Dutchess County offers a diverse, redundant high-speed communications infrastructure throughout the county, with a full range of broadband solutions to meet the needs of business and residents. A gigabyte Ethernet network is available in all parts of the County to serve the needs of businesses, public and private colleges and school systems, and local municipalities.
Three incumbent telecommunications companies (Verizon, Frontier and Taconic Telephone) offer services in the County through central offices equipped with digital switches and connected through redundant fiber networks. DSL broadband services to businesses and residents, as well as Frame Relay, T1/T3 and OCx capacity are available throughout the County. Verizon is currently expanding FIOS services in their territory.
The three cable companies in the County (CableVision, Time Warner and Susquehanna Communications) offer high speed cable modem and digital telephone services, as well as point-to-point fiber. CableVision provides free WiFi services to customers throughout their territory. Wireless and satellite services are also present. All libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library system offer free broadband and wireless access to residents. 3-G and 4-G cellular services are available in most parts of the county through Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.
Based on the County’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and the availability of government online services, The Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties ranked Dutchess County 2nd in the country for technology in July, 2009 – the 6th straight year of top-10 ranking.
