Nonprofit of the Year Award Winner
2018 Business Excellence Awards
It’s one thing to rescue women in need, but quite another to empower them to use their strengths to live self-sufficient and successful lives. Unshattered, a nonprofit social enterprise based in Hopewell Junction and winner of Think Dutchess’ 2018 Nonprofit of the Year award, does just that.
By supporting the economic independence and sustained sobriety of women in recovery through work with affiliated residential treatment organizations, Unshattered not only fosters long-term recovery for women winning their battle against drug and alcohol dependency, but has done so with remarkable results.
Founded in 2016 by CEO Kelly Lyndgaard, Unshattered has worked with more than 100 women in various stages of overcoming addiction, homelessness, criminal behavior and prostitution with the aim to end relapse, in part, by distancing the women from the source of their behavior. Eight of the organization’s alumnae currently are employed with the nonprofit and share a 100-percent success rate in their recovery. Another eight women that are undergoing treatment, work at Unshattered on a part-time basis. Among the graduates of the program are a program director, recovery support workers and newly enrolled college students.
As the women of Unshattered are transformed from broken into whole beings, so, too, are the repurposed materials from which they handcraft new handbags and accessories. Each product features a gold seam, a nod to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold-pigmented lacquer, adding to its intrinsic beauty.
In addition to serving women in recovery, Unshattered is an involved community participant, hosting “Design Your Own Bag” and other community events. Team members volunteer at local activities and the organization supports outside volunteerism by having helpers contribute through office work and other on-site tasks.
Ask Lyndgaard about Unshattered’s acknowledgements for its good work and she says the women the organization works with are its heroes. Unshattered honors the hard work they’ve already done to get clean by helping them stay clean.
